Why I Started a new Robotics Business, in Manitoba?

The world is transforming faster than most of us expected. Technologies that felt experimental a few years ago are now practical tools that change how businesses and households operate. Intelligent autonomous lawn mowers are a clear example.
I’m not talking about the small-lot robot mowers that have been around for decades. Those work fine on compact suburban gardens. What is changing the game now are intelligent, GPS driven systems designed for much larger properties — six acres or more. These machines use advanced navigation such as NetRTK, combined with vision cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and LiDAR. They can handle big residential yards, rural properties, and commercial grounds safe and with a level of precision and reliability that simply wasn’t available before.
When I look at this industry, I see the classic technology adoption curve at work. The early adopters have already been using these systems for several years. They tested the technology, proved it could work, and helped the products mature. Today we are moving into the early majority phase. A much larger group of practical homeowners and businesses is ready to buy. The late majority will follow once the technology becomes more visible in everyday neighbourhoods.
The market potential is substantial. Around the world, people with larger residential properties are looking for better ways to maintain their yards. In Manitoba this opportunity stands out. We have a lot of big lots, a long growing season, and plenty of snow. Many homeowners simply want their weekends back. The same logic applies to municipalities and commercial properties — parks, schools, business parks, and multi-site locations. Labour is expensive and hard to find. These advanced systems are already reliable enough for many of these applications, while the technology itself continues to improve quickly.
I saw a similar pattern years ago. In 2017 I started WeCobot, a company focused on collaborative robot welding solutions. At that time the early adopters were already active, but the broader market was just beginning to move. During the years I led the company as CEO, that timing helped us grow the business rapidly and expand internationally. Being present when the early majority starts buying makes a real difference.
Yard Robotics Manitoba is my way of working with the same dynamic again — this time in a market that is ready for growth world wide and right here in Manitoba. You can find more information at yardroboticsmanitoba.ca. The residential side for larger properties is mature enough to deliver solid results today. The commercial and municipal side still has significant room to expand as the technology develops further.
As an engineer I care about technology that works in real conditions. As an entrepreneur I look for moments when a market is shifting from early experiments to practical adoption. This is one of those moments.
Besides running this robotics business, I continue to work with manufacturers and business owners in Manitoba who want to introduce new technology or improve their operations with next-level solutions. The goal is the same: move to a higher playing field by using innovation that actually changes the way work gets done.
If you’re exploring what these advanced autonomous systems or other new technologies could mean for your business or property, feel free to reach out. Always happy to talk.
Let’s collaborate.
